Why do we conduct Integrated Pest Management Training?
Integrated Pest Management or IPM, as it is commonly known, is a system of managing pests designed to be sustainable. IPM involves using the best combination of cultural, biological and chemical measures for particular circumstances, including plant biotechnology as appropriate. This provides the most cost effective, environmentally sound and socially acceptable method of managing diseases, insects, weeds and other pests in agriculture. The plant science industry has endorsed IPM practices for many years, and has publicly declared its commitment to promoting IPM. All Jannakill Pest Solution departments support and abide by the FAO definition of IPM in its International Code of Conduct on the Distribution and Use of Pesticides (Article 2): “Integrated Pest Management (IPM) means the careful consideration of all available pest control techniques and subsequent integration of appropriate measures that discourage the development of pest populations and keep pesticides and other interventions to levels that are economically justified and reduce or minimize risks to human health and the environment. IPM emphasizes the growth of a healthy environment, human beings and crops with the least possible disruption to agro-ecosystems and encourages natural pest control mechanisms."
IPM is a flexible approach which makes the best use of all available technologies to manage pest problems effectively and safely. IPM strategies consist of three basic components:
- Prevention of pest build-up through use of appropriate crop cultivation methods.
- Observation of the crop to monitor pest levels, as well as the levels of natural control mechanisms, such as beneficial insects, in order to make the correct decision on the need for control measures.
- Intervention where control measures are needed.
An elementary principle of effective IPM is to develop pest control strategies that take into account all relevant control tactics and locally available methods, and are sensitive to local environment and social needs. The successful user of IPM will evaluate the potential cost effectiveness of each alternative as well as the whole control strategy. Elements that can be included in an IPM programme are summarized in figure overleaf.
Our experience in Jannakill Pest Solution indicates that IPM is a very new approach in the control of Pests in a sustainable way. This implies that there are Knowledge-Attitude-Practice performance gaps/discrepancies in the way the skills are being applied in our community, schools, workplaces etc. In order to close these gaps as well as rectify the performance discrepancies there is a dire need for training in Integrated Pest Management.
What are the objectives of integrated Pest Management training?
The overall objective of the training is to provide participants with information, education and hands-on experiences on IPM to prepare them to assist farming communities in developing strategies for sustainable Pest management.
The specific objectives include:
- Exchange practical experiences and knowledge on existing pest management strategies among the different countries;
- Identify various pest and observe various stages of life cycles of these species;
- Modify pest control techniques, if needed, as to integrate population monitoring mechanism for pests and as a basis to decide the timing of treatments that integrate a variety of control measures;
- Try out sustainable, science-based and tested technologies to suppress pest populations;
- Develop simple training models, curriculum, session guides, reference materials, and methodologies to train farmers on IPM, preferably within the context of participatory training methodologies and follow up training activities;
- Together with pilot farmers’ groups practice the design of innovative community-wide strategies for area-wide sustainable pest management.
How do we conduct our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) training?
As qualified and experienced consultants in their fields, and as certified trainers in IPM, Jannakill Pest Solution trainers deliver sharp, professional and value for time and money courses. We liven up every presentation with ‘real world’ anecdotes, photographs and/or video footage and real life exercises that get people thinking about real Pest Control issues in their workplace, Community, the school in an integrated manner e.t.c.
Jannakill Pest Solution specializes in designing and delivering ‘in-house’ training at your workplace – at a fraction of the cost of sending your people to public courses. Call us to discuss our discount day rate for your training courses.
The greatest benefit from engaging us to run your training is in the way we customize the course because we always carry out a Training Needs Identification (TNI) and a Training Needs Assessment (TNA) which give us a picture on what you need to be trained on and then we tailor-make or customize the IPM training to those Training needs; we are able therefore at the outset to know which methods to integrate in your IPM Training. Then wherever we can we use our knowledge of your systems and your history from the Training Needs Assessment to drive home the messages in a relevant and engaging way – we like our trainings to be Participatory so that learners discover concepts, synthesize them and make conclusions as they learn. Participatory trainings are intrinsically integrated in themselves and are very useful for effecting a training in IPM. In other words a Training Needs Assessment helps us derive an appropriate training curriculum for you.
Feedback from participants on all our courses routinely rates us as ‘Very Good’ or ‘Excellent; we always carry out end-of-training evaluations to gauge the level of our performance!
Some recent comments provided to us on feedback forms are:
- “I never got what Jannakill Pest Solution IPM training was about before this.”
- “Thanks that will make a difference at work, and even more in my life.”
- “That wasn’t boring at all.”
- “I’ve done lots of Pest Control IPM training before, but this one made sense.”
- “This was the best, practical Jannakill Pest Solution IPM training ever.”
We offer a range of courses to anyone and everyone in our public courses Training Calendar; but most often we run courses on request;
